Katch just announced they will be closing down May 4, 2016. The service was immensely popular with the Periscope and Meerkat live stream video users. In their post Farewell to Katch on Medium they said “we were unable to secure the financial resources we needed to continue.”
What will happen to your stuff?
You have until May 4 to download the videos or transfer them to YouTube. They have posted instructions on their website and created a couple of tools, which they admit are less than perfect, to help with this process. After that your data will be lost. So put that on your to-do list ASAP.
We grabbed our own video archive and found the process quite painless, but don’t expect it to be immediate. With 174 Mb of video content to transfer, we waited around 20 hours before we received a tweet from @katchHQ to let us know our videos were ready to download. The .zip archive contained all of our videos and for each an accompanying text file full of comments.
And so it’s back to a world without Katch.
What are your options?
Currently your only option to save your Periscope video is at the end of the broadcast choose Save To Camera Roll. From there you will be able to upload to YouTube if you wish.
RIP Katch. You were a great tool. You died far too young. You will be missed.
G’day Y’all!
